The Importance of Purposeful Running

Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen.” And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab and ran. Then said Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, yet again to Joab, but however, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready? But howsoever, said he, let me run. And he said unto him, Run.

Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain and overran Cushi. And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings. And the king said, “Is the young man Absalom safe?” And Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.”

And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. (2 Samuel 18: 21-23, 27, 29, 31-32).

The biblical story of Joab sending messengers to King David is told in the above Scriptures . Ahimaaz and Cushi are the two runners who are highlighted in this account. This passage not only illustrates a historical event but also offers timeless lessons about the significance of purposeful action and direction.

The Call to Action

When Joab instructs Cushi to relay a message to the king, Cushi responds promptly, demonstrating obedience and readiness to fulfil his task. This initial interaction illustrates the importance of responsiveness and willingness to act when called upon.

Despite lacking immediate tidings, Ahimaaz expresses a desire to join in the task of delivering the message. His persistence prompts Joab to grant him permission to run alongside Cushi. Ahimaaz’s eagerness to participate shows how important initiative and tenacity are when pursuing one’s objectives.

The Race of Purpose

As Cushi and Ahimaaz set out on their journey, they engage in a race not only of speed but also of purpose. While Ahimaaz surpasses Cushi in swiftness, his lack of direction becomes evident. The pursuit of goals without clear purpose or understanding can lead to inefficiency and confusion, as demonstrated by Ahimaaz’s aimless running.

In the pursuit of success, it is essential to prioritize quality over quantity. Cushi, despite being overtaken by Ahimaaz, ultimately delivers a message of great significance to the king. His focus on the content and importance of the message outweighs the speed of his delivery. This serves as a reminder that achieving meaningful outcomes requires more than just swift action; it necessitates purposeful intent and substance.

The Value of Direction

The journey of Ahimaaz reveals how crucial it is to have a distinct purpose in life. While speed may yield temporary advantages, it is direction that ultimately determines one’s success and fulfilment. Like Ahimaaz, individuals may find themselves racing ahead without a defined path, leading to confusion and uncertainty. Therefore, in all endeavours, it is crucial to prioritize clarity of purpose and direction.
